Questions from parents

How do you teach a child to play chess?

Start with one piece at a time and turn every rule into a small game. In Fenomen a child learns how each piece moves through short tasks: the piece collects sweets, carrots and stars and avoids the animals on the board. Step by step the child moves on to check, checkmate, castling and simple tactics.

At what age can a child start learning chess?

Fenomen is made for children aged 3 to 7. Tasks are short and rules are introduced one at a time, so even a preschooler can follow along, and parents see the progress on a separate screen.

Does my child need to know the rules already?

No. The game starts from zero: the board, how each piece moves, what check and checkmate are. Children who already know the basics simply move faster through the first levels.

Is Fenomen free?

It is free to start: the first worlds and lessons are available without payment. An optional Premium subscription unlocks all worlds (including the Castle and the Ice Island), all levels and all room decorations.
